Your New Year’s Eve Parties Will Play Multilingual Music - Forbes

The hottest music over the past several years continues to include more non-English and multilingual hits—often with Spanish. Be ready to dance to these at your New Year’s Eve parties.

Mixing language and clout, the biggest stars in music have jumped onto these sorts of tracks. After all, many hot songs over the last few years have been crossovers like this.

The version of “Mi Gente” by J Balvin and Willy William featuring Beyoncé mixed Spanish, English and international clout which helped the song gain popularity in the U.S. “MIA” by Bad Bunny with Drake did a similar thing.

Recent data shows at least one fifth of Americans speak more than just English at home. A large proportion of that group speaks Spanish, so it’s no wonder songs with Spanish only or a mix of Spanish and English are coming into mainstream. However, crossover songs may tend to be more popular since they appeal to a broader audience, including people who speak one language, multiple, or are trying to learn. Think: “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber.

If you’re unfamiliar, prepare for NYE by listening to some of the hottest language-crossover and non-English songs listed below (excluding those mentioned earlier).

  • “Loco Contigo” — DJ Snake featuring J Balvin and Tyga (or, maybe you’ll hear the just-released remix with Natti Natasha, Ozuna and more)
  • “Que Calor” — Major Lazer ft. J Balvin and El Alfa (or the Saweetie remix)
  • “Callaita” — Bad Bunny and Tainy
  • “Taki Taki” — DJ Snake ft. Selena Gomez, Ozuna and Cardi B
  • “RITMO (Bad Boys For Life)” — Black Eyed Peas and J Balvin
  • “Con Calma Remix” — Daddy Yankee and Katy Perry ft. Snow
  • “Te Boté Remix” — Casper, Nio García, Darell, Nicky Jam, Bad Bunny, Ozuna
  • “X Remix” — Nicky Jam and J Balvin ft. Maluma and Ozuna
  • “Go Loko” — YG ft. Tyga and Jon Z
  • “Tusa” — KAROL G and Nicki Minaj

While 2020 will definitely bring more mixed-language music, it’s possible other languages will join Spanish in the spotlight. Has there ever been a better time to learn a new language?
