Hot Springs Music Club's first show of season set for this month - Hot Springs Sentinel

The Hot Springs Music Club is getting ready for its first show of the 2019/2020 season, and plans on making it a fun one.

With the theme of "Music is Fun," the free event will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 15 at Grand Avenue Baptist Church on the corner of Autumn Street and East Grand Avenue. Three local groups, the Fun City Chorus, the Music Club's Ladies' Ensemble and the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble, are scheduled to perform.

Jacqueline Flowers, the club's president, said members are excited for the new season and this first event should appeal to a wide variety of people.

"I think people of all ages could enjoy it," she said, noting each group is very different.

Asked how the three groups came to be selected for the event, Flowers said she had heard Fun City Chorus perform at her church. "I was so impressed. They are a hoot."

Flowers said she has seen the group perform music from the film "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou." "They had the choreography and costumes to go along with the song. It was perfect," she said.

As the theme of the event is that music is fun, a group called The Fun City Chorus felt appropriate to book, she said.

The Hot Springs Flute Ensemble, Flowers said, was chosen because they perform a piece called "Ain't He Got Fun." Flowers is also the executive director of the ensemble.

The Ladies' Ensemble, which consists of members of the club, will also perform.

This is the first of five shows the club will put on this season. The other shows include "American Music Month," Nov. 10; "Winter Outreach," Jan. 12; "Junior Music Festival," Feb. 8; and "Community/Church Music," March 8.

Flowers said the February show will feature the young students of music teachers in the club.

The Hot Springs Music Club was created on Feb. 8, 1951, and consists of a wide variety of people including musicians, vocalists, and people who are either interested in or support music, Flowers said, noting the club currently has 42 members and numerous patrons.

A big part of the club, she said, is helping young musicians. "I think we all love music and I think we all want to pass that on," she said. The club offers scholarships to youngsters every year.

Flowers, who joined the club in 1982, became president of the club this month. "I think it is going to be a challenge. I am looking forward to it," she said.

She noted the club now has a website people can visit to get information on events and scholarships. Membership to the club has annual dues of $30.
