A Joliet Junior College music instructor became the school's only professor to earn the Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, or NCTM, credential from the Music Teachers National Association, or MTNA.

The professor, Yukiko Fujimura, has taught piano at JJC since 2018. The NCTM credential is awarded to music teachers that display competency in five areas that are essential to teaching music, according to the release.

JJC said the credential gives Fujimura credibility as a music teacher and provides her more opportunities for growth. She must renew her certification each year to ensure that she's involved in professional development, education and leadership opportunities.

Fujimura said she's been involved with the MTNA Illinois chapter and recently was nominated to co-chair a statewide music competition.

She is a native of Kanagawa, Japan, and comes from a "musical family," according to the release.

"They got me started when I was three years old," she said in the release. "After that, I always knew I wanted to become a musician."

She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and her doctorate in piano performance from Ball State University.
