Music, powerful message highlight Martin Luther King, Jr. ceremony at State Capitol Hundreds gathered inside the Wisconsin State Capitol rotunda to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday. - WKOW

MADISON (WKOW) -- Hundreds gathered inside the Wisconsin State Capitol rotunda to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday.

The fortieth annual official state ceremony was held to honor the civil rights pioneer. The ceremony was put on by Wisconsin Public Radio and featured musical performances from the MLK Women's Mass Choir, the Fall Gospel Fest Choir and the Milwaukee duo "Sistastrings." Ollie Watts, the Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of Illinois deliver the keynote address.

"Circumstances surrounding Dr. King introduced him to himself. He had to become the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Young people in the audience, he had to become the drum major for justice through redemptive suffering," said Watts Davis.

If you missed today's service, PBS Wisconsin will air a one-hour highlight of the ceremony on Monday night at 9 p.m.
