This week, we’re heading over to Grand Performances free street music festival, celebrating a Beatle’s birthday with peace and love, listening to a free concert over at the Getty Center, exploring a serpentine pavilion at the La Brea Tar Pits and blasting off to the moon in a show about Apollo 11.

Audacity of Sound

Every summer, Grand Performances presents a line-up of free concerts featuring acts as diverse as the City of Los Angeles. This year, with its California Plaza venue undergoing renovation, Great Performances is focusing on community reach.

The centerpiece of that effort is Audacity of Sound, a free music street festival running from 3-10 p.m., July 6 at 300 S. Grand Ave.

The festival will be, according to Grand Performances, a non-stop, immersive and interactive seven-hour, live music extravaganza highlighting the organization’s love for music around the world and from the deep talent pool in LA.

It will feature jubilant gospel, opera, capoeira, a marching band, boogie woogie piano, food trucks and a children’s reading room.

Confirmed artists include: Cimafunk, Djeuhdjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson, David Garza and Friends, LAS MUSAS: Chavela, Joni, Mercedes, Nina and Violetta, rising Indigenous Canadian star Jeremy Dutcher, contemporary Iranian music by singer Sara Naeini & Band and setar virtuoso Masoud Rezaei, The Gospel of Madame Biddy produced by Dexter Story, JROCC and Jae Deal, Garfield High School Marching Band, LA Opera, Sasha Smith on boogie-woogie piano, and audience participatory dance segments.

Beatle birthday bash

Ringo Starr will celebrate his 79th birthday with his 11th annual Peace and Love celebration at 11 a.m., July 7 in front of the Capitol Records Tower, 1750 N. Vine St.

According to ringostarr.com, the event will include tribute performances by Ben Kyle from ROMANTICA with Sara Watkins and Southern California rock and roll band The Jacks. There will also be a special premiere of an original song about peace and love composed for the occasion by students of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, in partnership with the South Central LA Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center. The song will later premiere online as a video featuring music students as well as guest artists and friends.

After the musical performances, Ringo will lead the gathering in a group “#PeaceandLove” moment at noon.

“I’ve said it before, but I really can’t think of a better way to celebrate my birthday, or a better gift I could ask for, than peace and love,” Ringo said on his website.

Can’t make it? No worries, says ringostarr.com. Just think “peace land Love” whereever you are at noon, and he’ll know you’re still contributing.

Off the 405

The Getty Center’s Off the 405 music series will feature Welsh singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon at 6 p.m., July 6 in the museum’s courtyard, 1200 Getty Center Dr.

Cate Le Bon creates uncanny folk songs tinged with a dark fragility, all delivered in her beautifully haunting voice.

“Le Bon returns to the stage with her just-announced album ‘Reward,’ written during a year-long stint living solitarily and learning to handcraft furniture,” says getty.edu. “The result is a collection of new music every bit as stylistically varied, artfully constructed and tactile as those in her back catalogue, but also intensely introspective and profound — her most personal to date.”

The event will open with a performance by master Ghanaian xylophone player SK Kakraba and will include DJ sets by Stella Mozgawa (the drummer from Warpaint) and Boom Bip.

Second Home Serpentine Pavilion

Through Nov. 24, the La Brea Tar Pits, 5801 Wilshire Blvd., is hosting the Spanish architecture firm Selgas Cano’s Second Home Serpentine Pavilion.

“Each of the rainbow tunnels takes you on different journey,” tarpits.org says. “There are multiple ways to wander, and many entrances and exits, but they all emanate from a center area where you’ll be immersed in stained glass light. The pavilion experience shifts from day to night — natural light seeps through translucent walls by day, and glowing lights illuminate its colors and surfaces once the sun goes down.”

Admission to the pavilion is free, but you will need to get a timed ticket either through tarpits.org/experience-tar-pits/second-home-pavilion or pavilion.secondhome.io.

The pavilion is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Apollo 11

Beginning July 5, the Rose Bowl Stadium, 1001 Rose Bowl Dr., will host “Apollo 11,” an immersive 360-degree show.

The show features an original story performed by a cast of 20 actors and presented in a “lunar dome” with 40,000 square feet of video projections. The performance takes you from the thrill of the countdown to the enormous Saturn V rocket launch and on an unforgettable journey to the moon.

The story is told through the eyes of a retired NASA aerospace engineer as he recounts the mission to his granddaughter.

Tickets range from $25 to $215 and can be purchased through apollo11show.com
